Drawing of a typical rock wall in Nerezine (Croatia)

If I was pressed to identify one iconic element for these islands that stand just off the coast of Croatia, I would have to select the ubiquitous rock walls that mark property borders.  These walls have resisted the strong local winds (called Bora) for centuries.  The longivity of these walls is due to the quality of the rocks one finds everywhere in this region:  very rough surfaces provide great traction where adjoining points meet--it is not uncommon to find long standing walls that contain no mortar whatsoever.
